How do you safely transport plastic models?
I have quite a number of plastic model ships that I wish to transport, but knowing how brittle they are, I was wondering if anyone out there would know how to transport them.
ALWAYS a “JOY” to have to move with plastic models !! Are you shipping them or just transporting them ??
When I take models to a convention or competition, I buy some expanded polystyrene foam, cut out the shape of the hull with about 1/8th an inch of extra space, and lower the model into this cradle. This is usually enough to protect a model during a car-ride, but I also AWAYS carry a small tool kit with glue, tweezers, masking tape, and small clamps… there will almost ALWAYS be a broken mast or antenna.
For SHIPPING, I do the same, though the foam cradle extends the full height of the model, and is then placed inside a box filled with crumpled newsprint for further cushioning. The TWO sailing models I’ve shipped, I shipped demasted, with tools for the purchaser to re-rig the masts.
