Is it possible that a Bipolar sufferer MAY sometimes “put it on”to?

gain attention or choose to laze about?

With the greatest respect I would like an answer..We have a friend who is Bipolar and try to encourage her to form an interest in various projects ie; Art work, crosswords, jigsaws, writing her progress, trips out, etc; etc; the list is endless. Within days she gets bored and we find she prefers just to sleep and this worries us. She takes quite a few pills and when she is on a high will go out and ‘booze’ despite our warning of mixing the two. Then of course she gets the ‘lows’ for weeks.

The behaviour of your friend of being ‘up and down’ is part of being Bi-polar. Polar means an end, bi means ‘two. So being Bi-Polar means two ends of the spectrum, or two types of behaviour. In this case, they two types of behaviour are (basically speaking) happy or sad. Or in Bi-Polar disorder, manic (hyper excited/crazy) or super depressive (low mood).
Obviously each individual differs, as each of us is unique in how everything affects us, be it illness, the weather, choice of politics or even the shoes we buy. I think this has to be taken into consideration, and often Doctors don’t do this. They see people as patients, and patients as ‘groups’.

So you ask, do people ‘put it on’? Do they fake? Well this is a hard question to ask.

My reply would be this: When in a ‘manic’ mood, this is just a phase of your friends illness. You know it will pass. This is why they ‘loose interest’ as you say. They can go hyper, almost crazy and this might last for a while, then fade away back to depression and not being able to do anything, not motivation no interest – just blackness. That is not ‘fake’ or ‘putting it on’, no. It’s just part of the illness, part of the symptoms that people display, and part of the reason why this problem (and depression) is so dangerous. Peoples brains run on brain chemicals, what are refered to as ‘neuro transmitters’. Now if these transmitters don’t get the message sent to out bodies, then our bodies don’t work too well. Some of these transmitters affect mood. Depression being one. So on a biological basis, your friend ‘looses interest’, because on a chemical level, and a neurological level , these transmitters get less excited – the electrical chemical pulses that make us ‘do things’, basically slow down. This is when your friend goes low…… She can’t help it. Medication blocks these signals, or tries to. But it’s very hard to treat, (as unlike depression), the levels change up and down.

Now as for her feeling depressed. Well naturally, people do appear to be lazy, they don’t engage in anything you want them to, and let themselves dwell in their own misery. This is not normal, and to you and I, then yes, they appear lazy.

But… you could again argue, it’s simply symptoms of the low phase of bi-polar disorder. Their behaviour is so radically different to the person who may sometimes come out with you, that to the un-trained eye, then yes, it looks ‘fake’ or ‘putting it on’.

Except it’s not. It’s just a symptom of the illness.

Drinking ‘booze’ is an obvious sign your friend is hardly happy. How could they be with this problem? Imagine living a life like this, where you mind is effectively trapped within a faulty circuit board. Bi-Polar disorder is very hard to treat and can have endless causative triggers.

Only your friend is aware of what made them miserable and triggered their health problem. Maybe there never was an event, and it was something as simply as a pregnancy, age factor, or just a ‘genetic’ factor that turned on one day.

I’m sorry to hear of your friends rather miserable life, but they are lucky to have you as you’re concerned enough to think about them and ask others for advice.

Do they know this? I think support is the best possible thing for someone with mental health issues, to know that their friends won’t judge them is a great help.

I hope your friend gets some help oneday, and well done for caring. Lots of people in our modern, selfish world, care about nobody.
